Sauerkrautathon, 2018

Yes, we are Officially Amazing!

Between us, we set the FIRST EVER Guinness World Record for the largest serving of sauerkraut. The record stands at 359.6kgs.

On 14th October 2018, at Wells Food Festival, our team of volunteers and members of the public sorted, chopped and salted over 400kgs of cabbage and fennel and the veg. was then tamped down into large vats. As people chopped at one end of the sauerkrautathon marquee, at the other end, a group of expert speakers talked to the assembled audience about the emerging science around gut health and the delights and benefits of home fermentation. At the end of the day, under the watchful eye of independent witnesses, the veg-packed vats were taken by tractor to ferment at my house in Wells for 11 days.

On 26th October 2018, the final weigh-in took place. The wonderful pink sauerkraut that emerged tasted delicious and our official weights and measures independent witness and our overseeing food hygiene officer confirmed that, together, we had made 359.6kgs of delicious, tangy sauerkraut, wholly fit for consumption. Throughout that afternoon, all 359.6kgs was potted up and distributed across Somerset. Some even found its way to London and Sussex. Thank you to every single one of you who helped us to achieve this.

We are now looking for someone to mastermind the next sauerkrautathon to try to break our record because, in doing so, you will teach many more people to ferment. Dedication, dedication, dedication’s what you need, if you want to be a record-breaker. If you think the next sauerkraut record-breaker is you, please do get in touch.
